The growing of the scientific knowledge, in Earth and Space Sciences, is a constant in the activity developed by universities and Meteorological and Geophysical institutions, at global scale.

The Instituto de Meteorologia (IM) has followed this movement, becoming involved in programs and projects of research and development at national level that aim at goals identified with the concerns and mission of the Institute.

The participation of IM has been expressed mainly through the integration in groups of development for the conception and dissemination of products with scientific and economical application, as well as in sharing the information of its databases and the following analysis of the obtained results.

The responsibilities assumed by IM are at national level, in the domains of meteorology, climate and seismology. Its research efforts are focussed on projects that revert for direct use of applications in the operational activity, in the search of an improvement of the information given to its users, whether this information is for commercial purposes or public service and, in this case in particular, with the concern directed for the safekeeping of people and goods.
