Being Meteorology a science where cooperation is essential as it is, not only in the technical and scientifically development area, but essentially in the filed of operations, the Institute of Meteorology cooperates with other National Meteorological Services through the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and on a regional level through organizations, centres and agencies that make the European Meteorological Infrastructure (EUMETNET, ECMWF, EUMETSAT, ECOMET).
Given the special connection between all the Portuguese Speaking Countries (PSC), mainly in areas such as education and training, operations and development IM maintains with the PSC Meteorological Services a strong cooperation not only by bilateral activities but also through the Climate and Environmental Issues Agency for Portuguese Speaking Countries (CRIA – Agência dos Países de Língua Portuguesa para o Clima e Respectivas Implicações Ambientais).
IM maintains a close cooperation with the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMet – Agência Estatal de Meteorologia de Espanha), not only on a bilateral level but also through the existing cooperation between the Ibero-American countries. Bonds were also created with China, following the transition of Macau to Chinese domain, that bring forth an exchange of experiences and cooperating activities that are bi-annually analysed in a joint meeting between China, Macau-China and Portugal.
Following its activities IM cooperates, on a national level, with other entities, public and private, such as the National Agency for Civil Protection (ANPC – Agência Nacional de Protecção Civil), the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA – Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente), the Water Institute (IA – Instituto da Água), the Hydrographic Institute (IH – Instituto Hidrográfico) amongst other government laboratories. At an international level IM cooperates with all other organizations that have complementary activities, such as ISDR, IPCC, UGGI, amongst others.
