Meteorological Support to Forest Fire Preventione

Since 1960, IM has been collaborating with other national authorities for fire combat and civil protection, forest management, and nature protection, as well as with research groups, universities, etc:

  • Meteorological observations at the national network stations; meteorological charts;
  • National and regional weather forecast bulletins; satellite and radar images and data from lightening detectors;
  • Three-hourly wind field prediction.

Specific information daily provided by IM to national entities involved in fire forest prevention include the following products for public or restricted area:

Observation

  • Values of the assessed indexes
    Table with information on the weather parameters observed at IM network stations (mainland Portugal) at 12 UTC (13 local time during summer season) and assessed FWI (Fire Weather Index) values based on such observations
  • FWI Map
    Map of mainland Portugal containing the FWI values observed at IM network stations and respective FWI spatial distribution
  • Fire Risk Map
    mapped integrated information on risk conjuncture assessed by the forest management Authority (DGRF) with FWI values for mainland Portugal
  • Map of risk classes at municipality level
    Map of mainland Portugal containing information on the class of fire risk by municipality, based on the mapped integrated information from DGRF with FWI.
  • Map of risk classes at district level
    Map of mainland Portugal containing information on the class of fire risk by district, based on the mapped integrated information from DGRF with FWI
  • Graphs of index evolution in time
    for the stations in district capitals with evolution of the different sub-indexes and index of the Canadian system FWI in time (8 days).
  • Map of mainland Portugal containing the Combined Fire Forest Risk (CFFR)
    Mapped values resulting of the integration of information on dryness of vegetal cover obtained by remote sensing (from NOAA satellites) with the different kinds of soil and with FWI
  • Map identifying active fires in Portugal
    Map of areas with probable starting fires of some dimension (at satellite passing time) and respective reliability degree, prepared in collaboration with the German DLR Agency with resort to images from the MODIS system borne by NASA satellites TERRA and AQUA

Prediction

  • FWI trend maps
    Maps with the expected FWI evolution (based on the ALADIN prediction model) for the day after (prediction for D+1) and another considering the FWI evolution from the day after to the subsequent day (prediction for D+2).
  • Map with the foreseen CFFR
    Maps of mainland Portugal with information on the CCFR index foreseen for the two days after, based on the ALADIN model prediction.
  • Map of the foreseen classes of risk by municipality
    Maps of mainland Portugal with the foreseen class of fire risk by municipality for the two days after, based on the ALADIN model prediction.
  • Map of the foreseen classes of risk by district
    Maps of mainland Portugal with the foreseen class of fire risk by district for the two days after, based on the ALADIN model prediction
  • Weather forecast bulletin
    description of the weather forecast (up to 3 days) prepared by meteorologists especially for forest fire prevention and combat.
  • Probabilities of index occurrence
    Graphs respecting the IM network main stations with information on the probability of occurrence of the different FWI sub-indexes and index based on the climatological study of such stations

Reports

  • Monthly report
    The Meteorological Institute elaborate monthly and anual reports of the FWI evolution, based on observations. This work is only available in Portuguese version.
